Resort America: your summer and winter international staffing solution

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of employees are available?
All of our participants are registered post secondary school students at least 18 years of age, and many are preparing for careers in tourism, hotel management and food service. Each individual is screened by trained interviewers and completes a comprehensive application form including references and police checks.

What kind of visa do they have?
Resort America is a J-1 work and travel program sponsor. All Resort America participants will have a valid J-1 visa allowing them to work legally in the United States for up to four months during their summer vacation.

My property is not a resort...can I still participate?
Resort America prides itself in the diverse experiences it offers its applicants. Resorts, hotels, country clubs, camping grounds, amusement parks, inns, conference centers and other vacation facilities have all benefited from our services. Call to see if we can be a staffing resource for you.

I don’t have housing facilities for participants, what can I do?
Many properties have acquired staff accommodations by converting guest units or renting off-site apartments or condominiums.

What are my responsibilities?
Aside from financial considerations and room and board, there are other obligations that accompany participation. Work hours should be the same as those of your American staff, and participants should get at least one full day off per week. In addition, access to off-site transportation on days off should be provided. Keep in mind that Resort America is also a cultural exchange program. It is important to provide opportunities for social interaction with American counterparts as well as access to activities and facilities. A quality work experience now, ensures the future of the program through goodwill and positive word of mouth later.

What about withholding?
Pocket money for our participants is not subject to social security taxes, however they can obtain a social security number at any branch office. The IRS personal exemption amount for 2006 was $3,300. We suggest that you consult with your tax advisor with any questions.

What if I have a problem with a participant?
Resort America Account Representatives are experienced in every facet of cultural exchange and are trained to attend efficiently to terminations, emergencies and rematches. By calling (800) 248-3572, you have 24-hour access to our support network, crisis team and emergency services. Fees are pro-rated for participants who leave your property early for any reason.
